Exploring Galle by bicycle
Galle is one of the most rewarding cities in Sri Lanka to explore by bicycle. The historic Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is compact enough to cycle in a single morning, yet rich enough to fill an entire day. The rampart walls offer sea views on both sides; the streets inside are lined with Dutch colonial architecture, boutique guesthouses, and excellent cafes.
Beyond the Fort, the coastal road south toward Unawatuna winds past palm-fringed beaches and quiet coves. Jungle Beach sits just off the road, barely touched by tourism. Further south, the rural backroads open up into rice paddies and fishing villages, and the longer coastal ride to Hikkaduwa approximately 17 km from the Fort, rewards confident cyclists with one of the most scenic stretches of road on the southern coast.
Whatever your pace, there is a cycling route in Galle that suits you. Rent a bicycle in Galle from our shop pickup point near the Fort gate, pick up your free route map, and explore the best cycling routes in Galle for detailed maps, distances, and difficulty ratings for every route.
