Bike Rental Prices in Sri Lanka 2026

A motorbike costs USD 16 per day for a short trip and USD 10 per day on a long stay. A scooter costs USD 11 down to USD 8. Both rates include full insurance, unlimited kilometers and helmets, and nothing is charged before you arrive.

Prices below are per vehicle, per day, and drop as the rental gets longer.

Bike Rental Prices in Sri Lanka: Motorbike and Scooter

Rates are tiered by rental length. The longer you keep the bike, the lower the daily rate, and the discount is already built into the table below. There is no separate peak or off-season price.

Renting for sixteen days or more cuts the motorbike rate by 37.5% against the short-stay price. On a scooter the drop is 27.3%. Discount codes apply on top of the tier rate, not instead of it.

Charged separately

Refundable deposit. USD 100 for a motorbike, USD 100 for a scooter. Taken at collection, returned when the bike comes back safely.
Sri Lankan driving permit. See the section below for the two options and what each costs.

Payment is taken on collection by cash, card, Google Pay, Apple Pay, or a payment link we send on WhatsApp. Nothing is charged in advance and there are no card fees. We accept USD, EUR, GBP and LKR.

Card deposits are charged rather than held, and refunded within two weeks of your rental ending. If your card is issued in EUR or GBP, your bank converts twice and the refund can come back slightly under what you paid. Paying the deposit in cash avoids this.

Do You Need a Permit to Rent a Bike in Sri Lanka?

Yes, and it is charged separately from the rental. Your home licence and your International Driving Permit are not enough on their own.

There are two issuers. If you have an International Driving Permit, the AAC permit is the better choice at USD 40 when you book a bike with us, which covers the government fee, the document charges and the paperwork. It lasts six months. If you arrived without an IDP, use the DMT counter at Bandaranaike airport, which is open 24 hours and costs LKR 15,000 for one month.

Motorbike or Scooter

Take the scooter if you are staying on the coast. Automatic, light, easy to park, and cheaper by USD 5 a day at the short-stay rate. It handles the Galle to Mirissa stretch without complaint.

Take the motorbike if the hill country is on your route. The 150cc engine handles the climbs to Ella and Nuwara Eliya without complaint. It handles them slowly, which is the only speed those roads allow anyway.

A bike is not right for everyone

If you are travelling with more than one bag each, luggage becomes the problem the bike cannot solve
If you have never ridden in left-hand traffic, start on quiet coastal roads rather than the Colombo road
If your itinerary has long daily distances and tight timings, a bike will cost you time
If you want to be dry when you arrive, a bike will disappoint you at some point between May and September

Where You Can Collect and Return

Delivery is free within 10 km of Galle, including to hotels and guesthouses. Beyond that radius we deliver across the south coast and the hill country for a fee based on distance. Pick up in one town and return in another.

Airport and train station transfers

We meet arrivals at Bandaranaike Airport and at train stations on the main southern and hill country lines. Send your flight or train number and we will have the bike waiting. Transfers are quoted by distance.

The Kandy to Ella train is worth taking without the bike. It is also worth taking with the bike waiting at Ella station, which is the arrangement most people end up preferring.

Luggage Transfer Service

How much does it cost to rent a bike in Sri Lanka?

A motorbike is USD 16 per day for two to four days, dropping to USD 10 per day for sixteen days or more. A scooter runs from USD 11 down to USD 8. Insurance, helmets and unlimited kilometers are in the price.

Is there a deposit?

Yes. USD 100 for a motorbike or a scooter, taken at collection and refunded when the bike is returned safely. Nothing is charged before you arrive. Card deposits are charged rather than held, so the amount leaves your account and comes back within two weeks.

Is the driving permit included in the price?

No, the permit is charged separately. The AAC permit is USD 40 when you book a vehicle with us, and that covers the government fee, the document charges and the paperwork. The DMT permit at the airport is LKR 15,000 for one month.

What is the cheapest way to rent a bike for a month?

Book 16 days or more to reach the lowest tier, then apply LTR15 at 25 days or more for another 20 percent off. That puts a motorbike at USD 8 per day.

Can I pick up in one town and drop off in another?

Yes. Delivery is free within 10 km of Galle, and one-way collection and return is available across the south coast and hill country. Message us with both towns and we will confirm.

Do I need experience to ride in Sri Lanka?

You need a valid licence and to be 18 or over. Traffic is left-hand and the horn is used as a signal rather than a complaint, which takes a day to get used to. Every rental starts with a driving introduction lesson.
