Why Rent a Tuk Tuk in Sri Lanka with NOHA

A tuk tuk is the one rental that fits Sri Lanka's roads as they actually are. It parks where cars cannot, takes Galle Fort's narrow lanes without a second thought, and carries two or three people with their bags.

Go at Your Own Pace

No tour schedule, no driver waiting. Stop at a beach that looks good, eat where the locals eat, and change the plan at breakfast. Wake up and decide whether today is waterfalls in Ella or a slow morning in Mirissa.

Built for the Roads Here

From coastal highways to hill country bends, a tuk tuk handles the routes larger vehicles struggle with. You will reach village temples, roadside fruit stands, and viewpoints that tour buses pass without stopping.

Priced by the Day, Not by the Route

A hired driver is quoted by route, so the more you want to see, the more it costs, and a change of plan is a change of price. Self-drive is quoted by day. Your rate covers insurance and unlimited kilometers, so the price is the same whether you cover 20 km that day or 200.

Part of the Street, Not Behind Glass

Drive a tuk tuk and locals wave, children grin, and vendors offer you king coconuts at traffic stops. You are not watching Sri Lanka through a car window. You are in it.

What It Costs

Tuk tuk rental starts at USD 18 per day. The daily rate is tiered by rental length, so the longer you rent, the less you pay per day.

Rental length Price per day
2–4 days USD 24
5–10 days USD 22
11–15 days USD 20
16–45 days USD 18

Discount codes apply from 10 days and stack on top of the tier rate. See the full breakdown and current codes on our tuk tuk rental prices page and the offers page.

The Tuk Tuk You Get

We rent the Bajaj 300cc, the standard three-wheeler you see across Sri Lanka, maintained by our own team in Galle. It seats a driver plus two passengers comfortably, three at a squeeze, with room for backpacks behind the seat. Top speed is modest and that is the point. Nothing about a tuk tuk encourages you to hurry, which is the correct speed for this island.

The Permit, Explained

Your home licence or International Driving Permit alone does not cover driving in Sri Lanka. You need a local permit, and for a tuk tuk specifically, the permit must carry a three-wheeler endorsement.

Sri Lanka has two permit issuers. The DMT counter at Bandaranaike airport issues permits for scooters, motorbikes, and cars, but it does not issue the three-wheeler endorsement. For a tuk tuk, the only valid permit comes from the Automobile Association of Ceylon.

We handle the application for you. The AAC permit costs USD 40 when you book a tuk tuk with us, or USD 45 on its own. That covers the government fee, the document charges, and the paperwork. You need an International Driving Permit from your home country, and the permit is valid for six months.

You can also apply yourself at the AAC office in Galle for USD 35. That saves you five dollars and costs you two to three hours at the office, so most travellers ask us to handle it.

When a Tuk Tuk Is Not the Right Choice

A tuk tuk is not the right vehicle for every trip, and it is worth knowing that before you book.

  • If you are travelling solo and covering long distances daily, a scooter or motorbike is cheaper and quicker.
  • If you need air conditioning or plan long highway stretches, a car suits you better.
  • If your whole stay is one resort with no road travel, you do not need a vehicle at all.
  • If you have never driven anything manual, allow for the learning curve. The lesson covers it, and most people are comfortable within the first hour.

Insurance and Roadside Assistance, Included Free

Every vehicle on Sri Lankan roads must carry insurance that covers the driver, because standard policies do not extend to third-party drivers. With NOHA, comprehensive cover for foreign drivers is included with every tuk tuk at no extra cost.

The cover protects the driver, all passengers, the tuk tuk itself, and any third-party vehicles or people involved in an incident.

Repairs Covered

If something breaks under normal driving, we cover the repair. If damage comes from use outside normal conditions, such as driving on a beach or through water, the repair is the driver’s responsibility. The terms stay clear on both sides.

Personal Travel Insurance

Our insurance covers the vehicle and third parties, not your personal medical costs, so take out travel insurance for the trip. Check that the policy covers driving a motorised three-wheeler, because some standard policies exclude them. We work with SafetyWing, whose plans include travel medical cover and trip protection.

How to Pay

Payment is taken on collection by cash, card, Google Pay, Apple Pay, or a payment link we send on WhatsApp. We accept USD, EUR, GBP, and LKR. Nothing is charged in advance and there are no card fees.

A refundable deposit of USD 120 is taken at the same time and returned when you bring the tuk tuk back. You can pay it by any of the same methods. Card deposits are charged rather than held, and the refund lands within two weeks of your rental ending.

If your card is issued in EUR or GBP, your bank converts twice and the refund can come back slightly under what you paid. Paying the deposit in cash avoids this.
