Driving a car out of Unawatuna

The beach and village don't need a car — it's walkable, and a scooter or tuk tuk is easier to park. Where a car helps is once you're covering more ground: back into Galle, or further along the coast toward Ahangama and beyond.

Sri Lanka drives on the left, and the coast road mixes tuk tuks, buses, motorbikes, and the occasional dog or cow, often without painted lane markings — a car is the most insulated of the four vehicles from that mix.

Either the AAC or DMT permit covers a car. We handle the paperwork for both before you arrive, so neither the AAC office in Colombo nor the DMT counter at the airport is somewhere you need to go yourself.

Questions about car rental in Unawatuna

Which car model should I pick?
The Alto K10 covers two people and light bags easily this close to Galle. Travelling further along the coast or with more luggage, the Wagon R or Aqua fit more, and the Prius is the roomiest of the four.
Is this self-drive, or can I hire a driver too?
Self-drive is the default — you get the keys, and we handle your Sri Lankan necessary paperwork before you arrive. If you'd rather not drive yourself, a chauffeur option is available on all four models, with the rate quoted per trip on WhatsApp.
Is a car necessary for Unawatuna itself?
Not really for the beach and village — it's walkable, and a scooter or tuk tuk is easier to park. A car makes more sense once you're covering longer distances.
Can I return the car somewhere other than Unawatuna?
Yes. Most guests finish in Galle, Ella, or further south along the coast. Tell us where you expect to end up and we will arrange collection.
