Colombo is a different kind of base than the coast or hill towns — a capital city first, with Galle Face Green's open seafront promenade and Pettah's old bazaar district both right in the centre, best explored on foot or by tuk tuk rather than covered by a long drive.

- Mount Lavinia, the closest beach to the city centre, is about 11 km south — an easy way to get a proper beach afternoon without leaving the metro area.
