Tangalle as a base
Tangalle is where the coast genuinely quietens down — long, mostly empty beaches rather than the busier towns closer to Galle.
Worth knowing before you go
- Rekawa's turtle nesting beach, about fifteen kilometres east, is worth the after-dark trip — the turtles nest seasonally rather than year-round, so it's worth checking before planning a special trip out.
- Dickwella's blowhole and Hiriketiya's horseshoe bay are both easy day trips the other direction.
- Tangalle also works as a natural staging point if you're continuing further east toward Yala — the roads open up and the traffic thins out noticeably past here.
Which vehicle suits Tangalle
- Scooter or motorbike — the quieter roads here make Tangalle a comfortable place to try riding for the first time.
- Car — suits it well too, particularly if Yala or a longer stretch of the coast is part of the plan; the open roads make for an easy drive with less need to weave through town traffic than closer to Galle.
