Weligama as a base
Weligama's wide bay is built around learning to surf — the beach road is lined with surf schools, and the stilt fishermen who pose for photos further along are a genuine, still-working part of the coast, not a staged attraction.
Worth knowing before you go
- Most of the bay is walkable; a vehicle is more useful for the short runs to Mirissa or Ahangama on either side.
- Taprobane, the small private island just offshore, is close enough to see without a special trip — part of the view from the bay road, not a separate excursion.
- Ahangama, a shorter and quieter surf town in the other direction, is worth the short ride if Weligama's beginner breaks feel too busy.
Which vehicle suits Weligama
- Scooter — suits Weligama well; the bay is compact and most of what's here is close to the beach road.
- Tuk tuk — carries more if you're travelling with boards or bags.
- Car — worth it once Matara or the longer coast road is on the itinerary, especially useful if you're hauling more than one board between hotels or riding out early before the beach road gets busy.
