Bentota as a west-coast base
Bentota's own beach does double duty — open-ocean swimming on one side, calm river-lagoon water sports on the other — so a lot of what draws people here doesn't need a vehicle at all.
Worth knowing before you go
- Aluthgama, the twin town across the river bridge, is 2.5 km away, with a local market, the train station, and the Kande Vihara Temple.
- Induruwa, a quieter beach with its own turtle hatchery, is 6 km south, and Beruwala, an old fishing harbour and lighthouse, sits 8 km north.
- Kosgoda's better-known turtle hatchery and conservation project is a little further at 11 km, and Ahungalla, a quieter stretch of coast, is 15 km down the road.
- Galle, our base, is 56 km south, and Bentota sits roughly midway on the run between Colombo and Galle, which is why plenty of guests use it as a stopover rather than a standalone stay.
Which vehicle suits Bentota
- Scooter or tuk tuk — covers Aluthgama, Induruwa, Beruwala, and Kosgoda comfortably on flat coast road.
- Car or motorbike — worth it for the longer stretch down to Galle or up toward Colombo and the airport.
