Arugam Bay as a surf base
The bay's Main Point and Whiskey Point breaks are both walkable from most stays — Arugam Bay is compact enough that a vehicle isn't needed for the surf itself, only for everything around it.
Worth knowing before you go
- Pottuvil, the small town at the lagoon mouth, is about 4 km north.
- Kumana National Park, roughly 25 km south through Panama, is a genuine day-trip safari destination — elephants, leopards, and a wide range of birdlife, on a longer, rougher approach than a coastal ride, so build in extra time.
- Tissamaharama and Yala National Park sit further out at around 150 km, and Ella, the hill-country town, is a similar distance west at roughly 130 km — both long half-day-plus rides most guests only cover once, at the start or end of an east-coast leg.
Which vehicle suits Arugam Bay
- Scooter or tuk tuk — enough for the bay itself and the short hop to Pottuvil.
- Motorbike or car — earns its keep on the longer runs, to Kumana for a safari, or onward to Tissamaharama, Yala, or Ella.
