Tuk Tuk, Scooter, Motorbike & Car Rental in Hatton
A tea-country town on the A7, the main railhead for the Adam's Peak climb and a base for the reservoirs and estate roads around Dickoya and Bogawantalawa. Hill driving here is slower and wetter than the coast — worth knowing before you pick a vehicle.

Hatton as a hill-country base
Hatton is small and functional — a railway station, a bazaar street, and roads that climb out in every direction through tea estates. Almost everything worth driving to is an estate road or a stretch of the A7, and both are slower going than any coast road.
Worth knowing before you go
- The Adam's Peak trailhead at Nallathanniya (Dalhousie) is about 30 km southwest via Maskeliya — a winding hour that gets very busy in the December–May pilgrimage season.
- Castlereagh and Maussakelle reservoirs sit just southwest around Dickoya, ringed by estate lanes and the old planter bungalows now run as boutique hotels.
- St Clair's and Devon Falls are on the A7 heading east toward Talawakele and Nuwara Eliya, a few kilometres apart.
- Kitulgala, about 40 km west on the A7, is the white-water rafting stretch of the Kelani River.
- Weather is the real variable — mist, sudden rain and cool temperatures are normal here year-round, and afternoons cloud over more often than not.
Which vehicle suits Hatton
- Car — the most comfortable choice for the hill roads: a heater, wipers, and a boot that stays dry when the mist comes in.
- Motorbike — for experienced riders only; the 150cc has the pull for the climbs a loaded scooter loses.
- Tuk tuk or scooter — fine for short estate-road trips in good weather, but slow on the long gradients and exposed to the rain.
If this is your first time driving yourself in Sri Lanka, it's worth reading how the paperwork and insurance actually work before you arrive — and the hill roads are not the place to learn to ride on the left.

Questions about renting in Hatton
- Do you deliver to Hatton?
- Yes, for the hill-country leg of a trip. Hatton is a longer run from our Galle base than the coast towns, but we arrange delivery and collection here — message us your dates and where you're staying.
- What's the best vehicle for the roads around Hatton?
- A car, for most people — the hill roads are wet, misty and slow, and a heater and dry boot matter. A motorbike suits experienced riders for the climbs; a scooter or tuk tuk is fine for short estate-road trips in good weather but struggles on the long gradients.
- Can I drive to the Adam's Peak trailhead from Hatton?
- Yes. Nallathanniya (Dalhousie) is about 30 km southwest via Maskeliya — a winding hour. In the December–May season the road and the trailhead car parks get very busy, especially around poya days and weekends.
- Do I need paperwork to drive in Hatton?
- Yes. The rules are the same across Sri Lanka. We handle the AAC or DMT paperwork before you arrive. Compare the AAC and DMT permits →
