Worth knowing before you go

• Coconut Tree Hill gets busy in the last hour of daylight — walk out earlier in the afternoon if you'd rather see it without a crowd of tripods, then watch the sunset from the beach below.
• Whale-watching boats leave early each morning in season — arrange your vehicle the night before, since the harbour road gets busy loading boats at dawn.
• Boats fill up fast in peak season, so sort your own transport well ahead if whale watching is the main reason for the trip, rather than relying on a same-day tuk tuk from your hotel.
• The road to Weligama (4 km) and on to Matara (about 14 km further) is flat and well paved the whole way — an easy half-day add-on, not a detour.

Which vehicle suits Mirissa

• Scooter or tuk tuk — enough for the town itself and the short hop to Weligama; the roads are flat and parking is easy right on the beach strip. A tuk tuk carries more if you're travelling with surfboards, dive gear, or a family.
• Motorbike — doesn't really earn its keep on this flat a stretch of coast; it's built more for the hill-country climbs further inland. A scooter does the same job here for less, unless you already prefer riding one.
• Car — worth it once whale watching, surfing, and a Matara day trip are all on the list in the same stay; copes better with a fuller itinerary and keeps bags, boards, and camera gear dry if the weather turns.

Driving around Mirissa

• Flat, well-paved coast road and light traffic outside of the harbour at dawn — about as easy as driving gets in Sri Lanka.
• The harbour road is narrow and busy loading boats before sunrise — worth avoiding that stretch early in the morning unless you're part of a whale-watching trip yourself.
