Hikkaduwa as a south-coast base
Hikkaduwa runs a couple of kilometres along the main Galle Road (the A2), with the beach on one side and guesthouses, dive shops and cafés on the other. The town itself is walkable; a vehicle is for the coast beyond it.
Worth knowing before you go
- The coral sanctuary is at the north end of the beach, in front of the older hotels — glass-bottom boats run from there, and green turtles come in close to shore to feed.
- Ambalangoda, 13 km north, is the centre of traditional mask carving, with a museum and workshops on the main road; Meetiyagoda's moonstone mines are a short detour off the same route.
- Galle and the Fort are only 19 km south — close enough that plenty of guests stay in Hikkaduwa and drive in for the day.
- Balapitiya, 20 km north, is the launch point for Madu River boat safaris through the mangroves.
- The Galle Road carries the coastal bus traffic, so it is the busiest road here — quieter going early, and the back lanes inland are calmer.
