About the Toyota Aqua
The Aqua is a full hybrid: a 1,496 cc petrol engine paired with an electric motor and an e-CVT automatic, which keeps fuel use low in traffic and on the coast road. Its 260-litre boot sits between the Wagon R and the Prius. A sensible middle choice for travellers who want automatic-only driving and low fuel spend without moving up to the Prius or its USD 500 deposit.

The Aqua is automatic only, using an e-CVT — an electronically controlled transmission with no fixed gears, so it pulls away smoothly with no shift shock. There is no manual option.

Refundable deposit
USD 400
Nothing is charged in advance. The refundable deposit is taken when you collect the vehicle, by cash, card, Google Pay, Apple Pay, or a payment link we send on WhatsApp, in USD, EUR, GBP, or LKR. Card deposits are charged rather than held, and refunded within two weeks of your rental ending.
If your card is issued in EUR or GBP, your bank converts twice and the refund can come back slightly under what you paid. Paying the deposit in cash avoids this.
The paperwork you’ll need to drive
Your home licence is not enough on its own, and neither is an International Driving Permit by itself. Sri Lanka has two issuers, and they differ in fee, validity, and which vehicles they cover.

Department of Motor TrafficIf you have an International Driving Permit, the AAC permit is the better choice. It costs less, lasts six months instead of one, and covers every vehicle including tuk tuks. If you arrived without an IDP, use the DMT counter at the airport. It is open 24 hours and you can collect it on the way out.

Why self-drive, and why the paperwork matters
Driving the Aqua yourself is where its hybrid pays off. The stop-start crawl through Galle, Weligama and Mirissa at sunset is exactly the driving where it runs on the electric motor and burns almost nothing, so a full day of beach-hopping barely moves the fuel gauge. Automatic-only and light to place in traffic, it is the one to book if nobody in your group wants to drive a manual.
Stay more than a few days, and driving yourself wins
Not because it is cheaper on paper. A hired driver’s day ends, and yours doesn’t. This rental is priced per day, with unlimited kilometres — the rate does not move based on how far you go or what time you come back.
Nobody should rent here without the local paperwork
We have handled the paperwork for every customer across 3+ years of operation, and no customer has been turned away at that stage. An operator who waves the requirement away has likely made decisions about insurance and maintenance that you cannot see either.

We deliver to your hotel or guesthouse and collect island-wide, arranged on WhatsApp. Airport and train station transfers are available — your Toyota Aqua arrives with a full tank and the 260 L boot cleared and ready for luggage.

Common questions
- How does the Aqua's hybrid system work?
- A 1,496 cc petrol engine and an electric motor work together through an e-CVT automatic. At low speeds and in traffic the car often runs on the electric motor alone, which is where a hybrid saves the most fuel. You never plug it in — the battery charges as you drive and brake.
- Is the Aqua cheaper to run than the Wagon R?
- On fuel, usually yes, especially for stop-start coastal and town driving. The trade-offs are a higher deposit (USD 400 against USD 300) and a slightly smaller boot than the Wagon R.
- Is the Aqua available as a manual?
- No. The Aqua is automatic only (e-CVT). If you want a manual, look at the Alto K10 or Wagon R.
- Will four adults fit in the Aqua?
- Four adults fit in the seats; the 260-litre boot is the limit. For four people with full luggage the Prius, with its 457-litre boot, is the more comfortable choice.
- Can I drop the vehicle off in a different town?
- Yes. Plenty of people pick up at our base and finish in Ella or Hikkaduwa. Tell us where you expect to end up and we will arrange collection. We can move your luggage separately too, if you'd rather not bring it with you.
- What if something goes wrong on the road?
- Message us. WhatsApp support runs 365 days a year and we arrange roadside help. We have driven out with a spare wheel more than once.
