About the Toyota Prius
The Prius is the largest car NOHA rents: a 1,798 cc full hybrid with a 457-litre boot that takes three large suitcases, and the most settled of the four on long highway runs to Ella or the airport. It is automatic only (e-CVT). It also carries the highest deposit of the range, at USD 500.

The Prius is automatic only, with an e-CVT — no fixed gears, so it pulls away smoothly and quietly. There is no manual version.

Refundable deposit
USD 500
Nothing is charged in advance. The refundable deposit is taken when you collect the vehicle, by cash, card, Google Pay, Apple Pay, or a payment link we send on WhatsApp, in USD, EUR, GBP, or LKR. Card deposits are charged rather than held, and refunded within two weeks of your rental ending.
If your card is issued in EUR or GBP, your bank converts twice and the refund can come back slightly under what you paid. Paying the deposit in cash avoids this.
The paperwork you’ll need to drive
Your home licence is not enough on its own, and neither is an International Driving Permit by itself. Sri Lanka has two issuers, and they differ in fee, validity, and which vehicles they cover.

Department of Motor TrafficIf you have an International Driving Permit, the AAC permit is the better choice. It costs less, lasts six months instead of one, and covers every vehicle including tuk tuks. If you arrived without an IDP, use the DMT counter at the airport. It is open 24 hours and you can collect it on the way out.

Why self-drive, and why the paperwork matters
The Prius rewards doing the long legs yourself: the airport run, the climb up to Ella, the cross-island push to the east coast all pass more calmly in it than in any other car NOHA rents. It has the most power and the most settled ride at highway speed, the 457-litre boot swallows four people's luggage, and the hybrid keeps the fuel bill down even on a full day of motorway.
Stay more than a few days, and driving yourself wins
Not because it is cheaper on paper. A hired driver’s day ends, and yours doesn’t. This rental is priced per day, with unlimited kilometres — the rate does not move based on how far you go or what time you come back.
Nobody should rent here without the local paperwork
We have handled the paperwork for every customer across 3+ years of operation, and no customer has been turned away at that stage. An operator who waves the requirement away has likely made decisions about insurance and maintenance that you cannot see either.

We deliver to your hotel or guesthouse and collect island-wide, arranged on WhatsApp. Airport and train station transfers are available — your Toyota Prius arrives with a full tank and the 457 L boot cleared and ready for luggage.

- How much luggage does the Prius take?
- Three large suitcases plus two to three cabin bags, in a 457-litre boot — the largest of NOHA's four cars. It is the one to book if four people are travelling with full luggage.
- Is the Prius good for long drives to Ella or the airport?
- It is the best of the four for that. The 1,798 cc hybrid has the most power and the most settled ride at highway speed, and the hybrid system keeps fuel use low even on long runs.
- Does the Prius need to be plugged in?
- No. It is a self-charging hybrid — the battery charges from the engine and from braking as you drive. You only ever put petrol in it.
- Why is the Prius deposit higher?
- At USD 500 it carries the highest refundable deposit of the four cars, reflecting its value. It is taken on collection and returned when you bring the car back — nothing is charged in advance.
- Can I drop the vehicle off in a different town?
- Yes. Plenty of people pick up at our base and finish in Ella or Hikkaduwa. Tell us where you expect to end up and we will arrange collection. We can move your luggage separately too, if you'd rather not bring it with you.
- What if something goes wrong on the road?
- Message us. WhatsApp support runs 365 days a year and we arrange roadside help. We have driven out with a spare wheel more than once.
