Driving a car out of Galle
Galle Fort itself doesn't call for a car — it's compact and walkable, and a scooter or tuk tuk is easier to park if you want wheels nearby. The car earns its place once you're past the Fort walls: the coast road south toward Unawatuna and beyond, or a longer day trip further out.
Sri Lanka drives on the left, and roads outside town mix tuk tuks, buses, motorbikes, and the occasional dog or cow, often with no painted lane markings. A car is the most insulated of the four vehicles from that mix, though the first few kilometres out of Galle are still worth taking slowly.
Either the AAC or DMT permit covers a car. The AAC office is in Colombo and the DMT counter is at the airport, but you won't need to visit either yourself — we prepare the paperwork before you arrive.

- Which car model should I pick?
- The Alto K10 covers two people and light bags easily around the Fort. Touring further along the coast or bringing more luggage for a longer trip, the Wagon R or Aqua fit more, and the Prius is the roomiest of the four.
- Is this self-drive, or can I hire a driver too?
- Self-drive is the default — you get the keys, and we handle your Sri Lankan necessary paperwork before you arrive. If you'd rather not drive yourself, a chauffeur option is available on all four models, with the rate quoted per trip on WhatsApp.
- Is a car necessary if I'm staying in Galle Fort?
- Not really for the Fort itself — it's walkable, and a scooter or tuk tuk is easier to park. A car makes more sense once you're covering longer distances or travelling with the family.
- Can I return the car somewhere other than Galle?
- Yes. Plenty of people pick up in Galle and finish in Ella or Hikkaduwa. Tell us where you expect to end up and we will arrange collection.
