Riding a motorbike out of Galle
The coast road south of Galle is where the motorbike's extra power over a scooter starts to show, especially on longer days out past Unawatuna. If you haven't ridden on the left before, it's the traffic on that road that takes adjusting to, not the bike — riding a scooter first and stepping up once you've settled in is a reasonable way to ease into it.
Expect mixed traffic outside town — buses, tuk tuks, other motorbikes, and the odd dog or cow, often with no painted lane markings. Most riders are tense for the first few minutes and then it starts working in their favour: there's time to see what's coming.
Either the AAC or DMT permit covers a 150cc motorbike, on top of a valid licence from home. We handle the application before you arrive, so the AAC office in Colombo and the DMT counter at the airport are both places you can skip.
