Scooter & Bike Rental in Hatton, Sri Lanka

The cheapest way to get around Hatton and the estate roads close to town — 'bike rent' in Hatton normally means an automatic scooter like this one. Good for short trips in dry weather; on the long tea-country climbs a motorbike has more to give.

Riding a scooter around Hatton

For short hops — into town, out to Castlereagh Reservoir, a loop through the nearer estates — a 125cc scooter is fine, and it's the easiest thing to park. The catch in the hills is pull: two people and luggage on the long climbs toward Maskeliya or up the A7 will have the scooter working hard and slow.

Weather matters more here than on the coast. Mist rolls in fast, the road surface stays wet under the tea, and afternoons cloud over most days — ride in the morning where you can, keep your speed down on the bends, and carry a layer. Two helmets come with every scooter.

A scooter still needs the paperwork — either the AAC or DMT permit alongside your home licence. We handle that before you arrive. If you've never ridden on the left, the Hatton hill roads are not the place to start; a flat coast town is.

The bike was near new, loved that the petrol cap wasn't under the seat so i could get it filled up whilst still sitting. Dropping off was just as easy and was given a ride back to my hotel.

Questions about scooter rental in Hatton

Is 'bike rent' in Hatton a scooter or a motorbike?
Usually a scooter — 'bike rent' and 'bike hire' are the local shorthand for an automatic scooter like this one. In Hatton's hill country, though, plenty of riders choose the geared 150cc motorbike instead for the pull on the long climbs. We rent both.
Can a scooter handle the road to Adam's Peak?
One rider travelling light, yes, in good weather and with time to spare — it's about 30 km of winding road via Maskeliya. Two people with bags will find it slow on the gradients, and in the misty season a car or motorbike is the safer call.
Can I ride with a passenger?
Yes. Both rider and passenger need a helmet, and two are provided with every scooter — though the hills are where a loaded scooter feels its limits.
Can I return the scooter somewhere other than Hatton?
Yes. Riders often pick up on the coast, ride up through the hill country, and finish in Nuwara Eliya or Ella. Tell us your route and we'll arrange collection.
