Riding a scooter around Hikkaduwa
The roads around Hikkaduwa are flat and close to sea level, which makes a scooter the easy pick: the coral sanctuary, the dive shops, the cafés inland, and the run down to Galle are all within comfortable range and there are no hills to sap a loaded 125.
The Galle Road is the catch. It carries the coastal buses, which move fast and pull in without much warning, so it is the road to be most careful on — ride it early, keep left, and take the quieter inland lanes when you can. Two helmets come with every scooter.
A scooter still needs the paperwork — either the AAC or DMT permit alongside your home licence. We handle that before you arrive, so you are not queuing at an office on the coast.
