Driving a tuk tuk around Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is flat and close to sea level, so the tuk tuk's 40 km/h cap costs you nothing here — the coral sanctuary, the Tsunami Museum, and the cafés inland are all short hops rather than proper drives.

The one road that asks for care is the Galle Road itself: it carries the coastal buses, and they move fast and stop suddenly. Go early for the run to Ambalangoda or Galle, keep left, and let the buses past rather than racing them.

Only the AAC permit covers a tuk tuk — the DMT permit does not issue three-wheeler cover. We handle the AAC application before you arrive, so neither office is somewhere you need to go yourself.

Tuk tuk

When we had a flat tire, they immediately got in their car and brought us an extra spare wheel. Before we hit the road, we were given a thorough driving lesson.

Questions about tuk tuk rental in Hikkaduwa

How much does tuk tuk rental in Hikkaduwa cost?
The same island-wide NOHA rate: from USD 24 a day on a 2–4 day trip, dropping to USD 18 a day past 16 days, with a refundable USD 120 deposit taken on collection. Full insurance, unlimited kilometres, a spare wheel and the AAC paperwork are included.
Is the Galle Road busy through Hikkaduwa?
Yes — it's the main coastal route, so buses and lorries use it and it's busiest in the middle of the day. The beach-strip side roads are calmer, and an early start makes the run to Galle or Ambalangoda easier.
Can I pick up in Hikkaduwa and drop off in Ella or Mirissa?
Yes. One-way trips down the south coast and up into the hill country are common — tell us where you expect to finish and we collect the tuk tuk there.
