Driving a car out of Mirissa
Mirissa's own streets near the harbour are narrow, so most guests park once and walk the beach road and the path out to Coconut Tree Hill rather than drive door to door — the car earns its keep more on the runs to Weligama, Matara, or back toward Galle.
Air conditioning is worth having here — the harbour road can get hot and still in the middle of the day, and it's a comfortable way to do an early start if you're catching a whale-watching boat before sunrise.

The paperwork you’ll need
You can use either the AAC or the DMT permit for a car — full comparison, fees, and how to get one before you arrive.
Compare AAC vs DMT →Questions about car rental in Mirissa
- Which car model should I pick?
- The Alto K10 suits two people with light bags. Catching an early whale-watching boat with camera gear, or travelling with more luggage along the coast, the Wagon R or Aqua carry more, and the Prius is the roomiest option.
- Is this self-drive, or can I hire a driver too?
- Self-drive is the default — you get the keys, and we handle your Sri Lankan necessary paperwork before you arrive. If you'd rather not drive yourself, a chauffeur option is available on all four models, with the rate quoted per trip on WhatsApp.
- Is a car necessary for Mirissa itself?
- Not really for the beach and harbour — it's walkable, and a scooter or tuk tuk is easier to park. A car makes more sense once you're covering longer distances along the coast.
- Can I return the car somewhere other than Mirissa?
- Yes. Plenty of guests finish in Galle, Tangalle, or further along the coast. Tell us where you expect to end up and we will arrange collection.
